Già aprendo la confezione di questo cd degli Iguazù Acoustic Trio, si intuisce la direzione che intendono intraprendere: proporre uno spettacolare mix di ritmi latin-jazz, afro/nord e sudamericani in cui la “leggenda vivente” della percussione mondiale -Alex Acuna –( qui in qualità di special guest) affianca Alex Battini de Barreiro un eccellente batterista / percussionista italo-argentino.
Solitamente, l’ospite di un album interviene in qualche episodio, mentre in questo caso, il leggendario Alex Acuna è impegnato a suonare ben 8 dei 12 brani: il reale valore aggiunto di questo lavoro discografico.
Il virtuosismo allo stato puro, l’eleganza dei riff con la complicita di un Fabio Gianni sopra le righe (pianoforte), creano un evento epico che lascia l’ascoltatore inebriato da un sound spettacolare ed efficace in tutte le sue forme.
Mentre si apprezzano gli arrangiamenti deliziosi e toccanti di brani quali Fragile ( Sting), Spain (Corea) e Libertango (Astor Piazzola) , così come l’ottima prova del basso di Marco Mistrangelo, il vero gioiello sta in Rubio, il brano di apertura composto da Fabio Gianni, nel quale tutti i musicisti, Acuna incluso, sfoderano la loro musicalità affiancata a una esecuzione impeccabile…. solitamente riscontrabile negli album di fattura internazionale. Tanto basta e avanza per non deludere nessuno: anche l’ascoltatore meno attento, magari abituato ad ascoltare un album sul divano, con la performance di Rubio balzerà certamente in piedi!
Chiude il delizioso Landing in Corea scritto da Fabio Gianni.
Un obbiettivo pienamente centrato questo album fatto di 12 tracce mai banali o scontate, in cui la raffinata miscela artistico/musicale la fa da padrone: un lavoro che certo non poteva sfuggire all’attenzione di Videoradio e Rai trade impegnati a proporre discorsi musicali di elevata caratura artistica.

Fabio Gianni ( pianoforte), Marco Mistrangelo ( basso elettrico) e Alex Battini De Barreio ( batteria) formano un trio che dal 2007 agisce in scioltezza all’interno di quel filone comunemente chiamato latin jazz. A dar man forte nell’occasione c’è un ospite d’eccezione quale il percussionista di origine peruviana Alex Acuna, musicista dal curriculum sterminato ( Weather Report , Joni Mitchell, Chick Corea, Santana, ecc.). Le composizioni originali sono alternate a pagine altrui( “ Spain” di Corea, “Libertango” di Piazzola, “Caridad Amaro” di Chucho Valdez, “ Fragile” di Sting) e il clima è ovunque inconfondibilmente latino, ora festoso, ora venato di romanticismo. Whether named for the famous Iguaçu Falls (larger than Niagara Falls) in Argentina, SA or because it spans the borders of Argentina and Brazil, or perhaps due to the splendor of Iguaçu National Park, the key here is natural and awesome. Whatever the reasons, as with their namesake (a natural splendor), this collaboration of gifted musicians delivers the true essence of natural Latin Jazz; the way a musician would hear it and the way it should be played. A very nice surprise! Iguaçu’s Latest CD is entitled “Rubio” and although we have not heard in its entirety, we did take careful listen to three cuts submitted for review: 1.Spain: Composed by Chick Correa, 1971 – A very interesting arrangement; we liked it as the Melody of the break is in 6/8 and that is how it should be. This rendition, there is much respect for the phrasing of the melody which often evokes other forms of interpretation. Kudo’s well done!! 2.Brasillified: Samba Novo – Very much in the style of João Donato , Camargo Mariano, Tamba Trio and Michel Camilo. A very creative use of 6/8 with the rhythm section very nicely supporting the pianist and his phrasings. Super, with the bassist exhibiting the influences of Patitucci, Conceiçao y Assumpçao. 3.Herbiegaloo: Yes sir, its Boogaloo with a Herbie twist and a lot of flavor; smooth. In this double time groove the pianist displays influences of Herbie Hancock’s third album released in 1963: Inventions & Dimensions.We really did enjoy these cuts and thanks to our technical expert (Neff Irizarry II (Puerto Rican Jazz Guitarist residing in Finland) we were able to truly understand the music and share with his insights. Iguazú Acoustic Trio – Rubio June 2, 2012 · Posted In: CDs
A vivid sound with a style compounded of elegance and full of unexpected detail, that is the music of Iguazú Acoustic Trio. The album starts with the energetic title track “Rubio”, an original Latin jazz composition by pianist Fabio Gianni. The second track is an exquisite version of Sting “Fragile”. Gianni improvisations are poetic and refined, even when the arrangement gets funky. The album continues with a Cuban traditional, “El Cuarto de Tula” (Tula’s Room). The percussion of the great Alex Acuña, truly shines on this track. The pace slows down for bassist Marco Mistrangelo original “Notturno”, a beautiful ballad where Gianni combines lyrical lines with elongated phrases on piano. The trio ventures into the jazz classic by Chick Corea “Spain” with great success. On this faster version the trio demonstrates their impeccable technique with spontaneity and ease. A gorgeous piano improvisation serves as an intro for the wonderful rendition of Piazzola “Libertango”. Bassist Marco Mistrangelo has some of his brightest moments on this one with logical and fresh improvisations.
The trio goes to Brasil with the contagious rhythms of the samba “Brasilified”, proving these guys feel at home playing almost any music style. “El Pescadito y el Mar” is another original, this time by drummer Alex Battini and just like the tittle tracks “Rubio” and “Guajira for Chucho” (for sure dedicated to Cuban pianist Chucho Valdéz), this one also shows the heavy influence of Latin music on these Italian musicians.
The album ends with another Gianni original, “Landing in Corea”, a composition with a distinct Chick Corea influence.

Avete Presente il fiume Iguazù al confine Tra Argentina e Brasile? Genera delle cascate bellissime, talmente belle che L’Unesco ha pensato di tutelarle rendendole patrimonio dell’umanità. L’idea del Pianista latin jazz Fabio Gianni, invece, sembra quella di tutelare l’immenso patrimonio della musica sudamericana. L’Iguazù Acoustic Trio ( Gianni al piano, Marco Mistrangelo al basso e l’italo-argentino Alex Battini De Barreiro alla batteria) riesce nell’intento, dedicando Rubio interamente alle sonorità latin. Ospite gradito e fondamentale è il gran percussionista peruviano Alex Acuna ( Weather Report) , uno che con le percussioni ci sa fare davvero, qui anima e ritmo del progetto. Il lavoro guarda alle sonorità cubane , argentine, e brasiliane, con originale modernità, omaggia i grandi della musica sudamericana e non solo arrangiando i loro successi in chiave latin jazz: L’immortale Libertango di Astor Piazzola, Caridad Amaro di Chuchu Valdes o il tradizionale cubano El Cuarto de Tula. Da non perdere la struggente Fragile di Sting: qui Gianni sfoggia tutto il suo delizioso tecnicismo romantico, coadiuvato dall’energica presenza di Mistrangelo. È il pezzo più bello dell’album. Nella title trck, creatura di Gianni, Acuna è il “polpo delle percussioni” che conosciamo, divertente e coinvolgente. In El Pescadito y el mar c’è spazio per i “ pensieri” di Alex Battini, alle prese con l’hang, una percussione metallica dal suono ipnotico, in un brano dal sapore etno-trance appagante.
